Travis Kalanick Built Uber by Breaking Everything
He built a category, broke every rule and got pushed out of his own company
I got to know the story of Uber from this 2022 series and became fascinated with Kalanick during that time.
Well, people say that Travis Kalanick fell down the ladder when peak issues hit the company like sexual harassment, toxic work culture, the fiasco with Uber drivers and board seat battles.
Let me tell you a couple of things.
Uber was a category creator.
Now, 14000 companies operate in the ride sharing market globally with DiDi Chuxing dominating China, Rapido in India, Bolt/Freenow in Europe, InDrive and Cabify in South America alongside Uber. This revolution couldn’t have happened without Uber.
I’m not getting into micro economics but think about it.
When internet adoption was gradually soaring, this man and Garrett came up with a beautiful concept that still runs economies.
What Travis and Uber gave to the world.
War Rooms
He coined the term and was a big believer of this. The war room was a place open 24/7 in SF Uber HQ where the most serious of problems were solved. They solved regulatory problems, managed operational strategies and global crises during their expansion.
All other companies later followed with this concept.
Beast Operator
Travis was a beast operator. He stood his ground all the time. From his interactions with Logan Green (Founder of Lyft) where he refused to acquire them because he figured he’s doing a favour to the copycats, to the taxi and livery business snafu. Fighting regulations and lawsuits and drivers, he was handling all at once where as Garrett and his team weren’t really on the drivers seat.
Frictionless Experience
His idea and imagination goes way beyond.
He said someone touches glass and you get a sedan right outside your home.
You get into the car and you reach your destination and you get out.
No need to pay cause the app wallet has already paid the driver for the trip.
The scene with Bill Gurley and Travis Kalanick in the beginning just describes his vision.
Tech to the Physical World
He always had a thing for bringing technology to physical life. Uber Eats was insanely growing at the time and when Kalanick left DoorDash only had a market share of 5%, which means had he stayed Uber would be a world leader in food delivery as well.
Like in 2026 none of this sounds fancy but you gotta think deep.
It’s 2009, peak winter and the economy has just come out of the recession.
You can go on, live a normal life. Go do your work, come back home to your wife and kids and live a cozy life.
But no he broke all traditional barriers, He even created a home show than a road show for his funding round calling in all the top investors of the world to Uber HQ.
The Other Side
The issues with Uber were endless and this is coming straight out of the Uber files so no level of bias exists on our end.
Greyball: build a fake Uber for the authorities so that on the screen a fake taxi would appear and the regulators could never get a drive in and bust them.
Kill Switch: regulators arrive, remotely shut off their office access and happened in offices worldwide.
Hell: Spying on Lyft’s marketplace.
Operation SLOG: recruit Lyft drivers at scale, find the uber/lyft usage split and promote the ones that are using Lyft more.
God View: Uber could see where people were going. They had a tracker leash type system so they could understand usage from a user POV.
Google battle: Waymo/Otto/Autonomous cars. Anthony Levandowski file leaks followed by lawsuits.
Apple battle: Uber violating Apple’s privacy policies without letting them know. Tim and Travis met and had to sort it out (2015)

Category Creators
The United States is now greater than ever because it has revolutionized category creation in this field. From social media, quick commerce, food delivery, ride sharing, search engines, PC manufacturing, dating apps, cloud based applications. They are the category creators and that is why they’re one of the most dominant and developed countries right now.
Almost every major tech category we use daily was invented by an American.
Zuckerberg built social media into a global standard from a dorm room.
Bezos turned an online bookstore into the backbone of the internet.
Gates and Jobs made personal computing real before anyone understood why it mattered.
Brian Chesky couldn’t pay rent and accidentally invented global home sharing. Reed Hastings got mad at a late fee and killed an entire industry.
The talent is global. Some of the best engineers alive are in India and China.
But their biggest companies followed the playbook. Didi is Chinese Uber. Ola is Indian Uber. Flipkart is Indian Amazon. Zomato is Indian Doordash.
Brilliant execution, but following a playbook Americans wrote first.
Why? It’s not just smart people. It’s the ecosystem.
VC culture that funds crazy ideas early, a massive consumer market to test in and a culture that doesn’t punish you for failing.
Uber is the perfect example. Kalanick didn’t build a better taxi. He invented a category. Then every country built their own version.
That’s the pattern. America creates the game. Everyone else plays it.
What is Travis Trying to Do Now?
He’s been working on Atoms for the past 8 years. Made a couple of acquisitions with companies like CloudKitchens, Otter, Pronto AI and it spans out quite well.
The reason I knew Atoms before they even got funded is cause my team was speaking to CloudKitchens, trying to sell a financial platform that takes care of their billing and invoicing.
I clearly stated (founder of Uber) in my internal notes and there’s just one thing that came into my mind. The only correction was he didn’t found the company which I later got to know.
The internet has made the world a very small place. From Bengaluru to Colombia and to New York, a call is all that took me to get this meeting.
Who knows next time might as well be dealing with Travis directly to close commercials and maybe everything goes well, implement this platform directly to Atoms for his entire subsidiary.
Ending Notes
Legends are created in the battlefield. And they die there as well.
Kalanick gave zero fucks about anything but Uber.
Aggression was his motto of life. Sure, his intentions weren’t to hurt people and there was collateral damage during those days.
But he fucked the system, he fucked the system real hard and put a dent with Uber.
No one can take that away from him or his innovation. When it started out, the technology was insane and when you think about his sequel move with Atoms he had that vision from the start.
Bringing technology to the physical world.
The final thing is that everything in life is a yin and a yang.
You can hate Travis as much as you want but the same things that destroyed him at the end were the things that built Uber into a multibillion dollar business.
The level of regulations, law and order, competitiveness and the lack of education around this market made the barriers to entry super high. The taxi and the livery department was anti from the very start but look at it now. One of the greatest business model and more importantly one of the greatest founders in the game.
If you want something really badly and you push hard enough, the world follows you. Look at where Uber has reached today.
